MLK Day of Service

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence. MLK Day of Service is a way to honor his life and teachings by engaging in community action that continues to solve social problems. Service breaks down barriers by bringing people from different experiences together – volunteering can unite Americans of all ages and backgrounds while building stronger communities.

Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

For 2020, we had an amazing day celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy. Flint River Fresh and Phoebe hosted our first MLK day of service at our partnership community garden. We had 125 volunteers come on the coldest day of the year to plant fruit trees and fill raised garden beds with compost. We appreciate all those who took part in our activities to increase access to fresh food in our communities.
